Coming to SA in 2022 – Volkswagen teases its all-new Amarok bakkie

Volkswagen has come strong out of the blocks for 2022 with a slew of new models set to be launched in the duration of this year – one of them is the all-new Amarok bakkie that is set to arrive on local shores later this year.

Specifics abundantly clear from the brand’s official teaser images is the new Amarok not only has a completely new appearance inside and out, but in future will also have even more extensive equipment on board. In addition, the bakkie will feature innovations that have not been seen before in the segment it competes in.

The Amarok has been in production since 2010 and, just like the new Ford Ranger with which the German bakkie will be built alongside at the Silverton Plant in South Africa, was in need of a brand-new model. It is similar to what Nissan and Mercedes-Benz did with the Navarra and X-Class bakkies, respectively.

The newest version will be built in South Africa at the Silverton manufacturing plant in Pretoria. As a matter of reference, over the last decade, more than 800 000 vehicles have been sold globally. The new model will have a tough task to seriously rival the likes of Toyota’s Hilux, Ford’s Ranger and Isuzu’s D-Max.

The current generation also happens to hold the accolade as the most-powerful bakkie in SA with its 190kW V6 TDI engine.

The new Ford Ranger bakkie will launch in the fourth quarter of this year and projections suggest that the Amarok will debut around the same period.

Official confirmation regarding specifications and pricing will be made available closer to the vehicle’s launch date.
